A pointer is a hint, a suggestion, I think of it as pointing someone in a direction. Usually I do this when for one reason or another I cannot provide a full solution but know which is the right direction. If, for example, I don't have time to explain a thing thoroughly at the moment, I typically offer to explain it in full later, but offer “pointers” for which way to go in case the person still wants to try their luck themselves.
