The Biggest Letdown of the Year 2025 award goes to the European Union, which is currently going out of its way to tank its reputation and legitimacy, by pushing a piece of legislation that aims to abolish confidentiality of telecommunications. There are various relevant terms to note here:
- Briefgeheimnis | Secrecy of Correspondence
- Fernmeldegeheimnis | Secrecy of Telecommunications
- Postgeheimnis | Secrecy of the Mail
In all cases, “confidentiality” can be used instead of “secrecy”.
These three terms are anchored primarily in German legislature and, in their own domains, are not the same as legislature in other countries. However, the goals these legislatures aim for are very important for us conceptually, and every European nation has laws protecting similar things.
